The Nationale Reisopera is continuing its series of Verdi (1813-1901) operas with 'Un ballo in maschera'. The piece was originally based on a libretto by Eugène Scribe about the Swedish King Gustav III who was assassinated in 1792 during a masked ball. The board of censors at that time insisted that the action had to be moved to Boston and the figure of the King became the English governor Riccardo. Despite these changes Verdi’s opera remained a blisteringly dark drama about conspiracies and suspicion that unfolds breathtakingly fast before the audience’s eyes. This production is by Monique Wagemakers, who has previously done the stunning and stylish staging of 'La traviata' and 'I due Foscari' for the Nationale Reisopera. The Dutch soprano Kelly God will be making her Reisopera debut in this production and the excellent tenor Peter Auty will be returning in an important Verdi role. Sung in Italian with Dutch supertitles.
